About A Dad Story

I never fancied myself a writer

Something comes over me at bed time. The boys are strangely wound up after bath time and brushing teeth and sometimes it's a struggle to get them to sit still and calm themselves for sleep. Sometimes it’s self inflicted because it’s hard for me to resist “Rile Time” where I get them laughing and jumping, but who can resist a child’s laughter and enjoyment?

That's where the Dad Story comes in. While corralling the boys into bed and sitting down with them these stories start to emerge with wild and unusual characters and bizarre events. The most unlikely combinations capture their attention and my boys stop wiggling and start imagining. They start to track along with the story and feel the emotions of the characters and question the surprising sequence of events, but they listen. They listen to see what happens next, to see if their questions will be answered. The Dad Story pulls in elements from their day, from their world and the physical room around them. So, they listen, they settle in and the story lives on.

The Daddy Story (for little kids) or The Dad Story (for older kids) is a genre of timeless importance. Tales of wisdom and experience are passed from father to child with a connection that cannot be undervalued. Time is the most valuable, inspiration is an important side effect, attention soothes and guides. When Daddy reads to a child from a book or from a "pretend book" the child gains the fundamentals of reading and value beyond words.
